Researchers and individual anecdotes have already linked it to numerous health benefits, such as helping to treat anxiety, depression, inflammation, skin conditions, chronic pain, and certain seizure disorders. The Research Supports CBD for Sleeping Disorder and Insomnia

Although scientists still need to conduct more research, the research so far shows that CBD has potential in treating sleeping disorders as well as insomnia. A review of the research literature published in 2017 showed that CBD might have the potential for treating insomnia.

The research also looked at the effect of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive component of cannabis on insomnia. It found that while THC might make it easier to fall and stay asleep, the sleep quality would likely be poor. As such, CBD is the better choice in this situation. That is particularly true given the lack of psychoactive effects, so there is no impairment on daily functioning.

The same literature review also found that synthetic cannabinoids might help with obstructive sleep apnea. Since those synthetic cannabinoids are related to CBD, this indicates promise for CBD as well. The review further found that CBD may be promising for excessive daytime sleepiness and disorders affecting REM sleep behavior. The review did, however, indicate that more research is necessary, including studies with controls and over a longer time.

More and More Research Arises

Additionally, more and more research supporting the use of CBD for sleeping disorder and insomnia keeps appearing. In January 2019, the Permanent Journal published a study showed that CBD can help overcome short-term sleep-related problems.

Why Does CBD Help With Sleeping Disorders?

We are not in the dark about why CBD is useful for treating insomnia symptoms. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center neurosurgeon and clinical professor Joseph Maroon, M.D. has conducted his own research on CBD and its impact on the brain. He explains that some of the properties of CBD may help you have a better night’s rest. Specifically, CBD helps with pain and anxiety, and both of those issues can lead to sleeping problems, whether falling asleep or staying asleep.

Even Maroon says that we still need to conduct more research to figure out the ideal dosage for CBD in this situation as well as the amount to take. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of people who successfully use CBD for treating sleeping disorders. At the same time, others do not experience relief at night with CBD. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be different in regards to CBD reactions, meaning that it can work for some but not others. The good news, however, is that since CBD is non-psychoactive and has minimal to no side effects, you will not lose anything in trying it for your sleep condition.

Because of this, Maroon indicated that he does not view CBD as a direct solution for insomnia. Instead, he sees it as a natural way of treating insomnia symptoms and causes, like anxiety or pain.

The researchers in the previously mentioned January study in The Permanente Journal also have a few ideas about why CBD helps with sleep. The study’s main author feels that some of the results may be due to the placebo effect. Other research has shown that cannabis compounds, including CBD, interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system. One or more of the receptors in that system can affect our sleep and wake cycle. This opens the window for a potential direct method of CBD improving sleep.

That said, the doses researchers have tried for CBD vary greatly. The other benefit of starting with a smaller dose and increasing if necessary is that you will save some money.
