Now your ice cream will help you chill out in more ways than one.
Ice cream aficionados Ben and & Jerry’s is taking CBD where it’s never been before: the frozen snack aisle. The Vermont-based company, legendary for its iconic flavors like “Cherry Garcia” and Stephen Colbert’s “Americone Dream,” is expanding its offerings. And with the legalization of CBD across the U.S. late last year, the choice was obvious: CBD-infused ice cream.
“We’re doing this for our fans,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO Matthew McCarthy said in a press release on May 30. “We aspire to love our fans more than they love us and we have to give them what they want, to give them what they’re looking for in a Ben & Jerry’s Way.”
But Ben & Jerry’s isn’t the only ice cream company that’s adding CBD into their recipe. The market has spoken and the answer is clear: people want CBD-infused ice cream.
Non-Psychoactive but Still Groovy
CBD is a close cousin of THC cannabis’ psychoactive compound. THC and CBD share many similar properties, but have one main difference. CBD won’t get you high. In contrast, CBD has a multitude of other effects. These include pain relief, calming effects, and sleep aid. Research has shown that CBD can even help fight certain types of cancer. And don’t worry about having crazy dreams if you eat too much ice cream before bed. CBD-infused ice cream, as part of the new CBD edibles industry such as CBD gummies, will make an attractive dessert, thanks to its ability to enhance sleep.
In addition to these effects, many types of CBD extracts also include compounds called terpenes. These are oils that translate into flavor when they hit your tongue. Consequently, you’ll get more complex flavor profiles from CBD-infused ice cream.
The move is a natural progression for Ben & Jerry’s. The company has always been conscious of its customer base. Some of its most famous flavors, including “Phish Food” and “Jerry Garcia,” are references to rock bands associated with CBD and cannabis. Ben & Jerry’s hasn’t said when it’ll release its CBD-infused ice cream, which so far has remained nameless.
The company says it will release the ice cream when CBD-infused foods become federally legal. While CBD-infused products like chocolates and gummies area already available in some areas, the FDA apparently overlooks these CBD-infused food products. They’re leaving plenty of red tape for CBD-infused ice cream companies to navigate.
The Next Big Thing
Ben & Jerry’s might be one of the biggest names in ice cream in the U.S., but they’re not the only ones who are churning up CBD-infused ice cream. A number of smaller ice cream shops in the U.S., including Brooklyn locals Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream. Van Leeuwen’s “Couch Potato” ice cream includes roasted peanuts, caramel swirls, chocolate-covered pretzels, and five milligrams of CBD per serving. Oh, and it’s also vegan. Don’t live in Brooklyn? No problem. In contrast to Ben & Jerry’s, Van Leeuwen’s will ship its CBD-infused ice cream nationwide.
This isn’t an isolated incident. A National Restaurant Association poll shows that three out of four chefs in the U.S. think that CBD-infused food will be a breakout hit in 2019. The poll asked 650 American chefs what they thought would be the biggest new trend in restaurants would be. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of CBD-infused food.
Will CBD-infused ice cream be the wild success some expect it to be? That’s something only the future will tell. But if you want to get in on the action, you can find plenty of CBD-infused ice cream on Google.
