Unraveling Charlotte’s Web: The Story Behind the Strain

By now, millions of people across the U.S. have heard of Charlotte’s Web. Charlotte’s Web is a strain of cannabis high in CBD, a compound that may have a variety of therapeutic effects. Also, CBD doesn’t contain THC, the chemical in cannabis that gets you high. Instead, it may have a variety of significant effects. The Stanley Brothers

Charlotte’s Web was developed by the Stanley Brothers, a group of seven brothers from Colorado. Instead of trying to grow high-THC cannabis like the majority of Colorado growers, the Stanley brothers started by focusing on high-CBD strains. However, they’ve since moved into growing high-THC plants as well.

The brothers, Joel, Jesse, Jon, Jordan, Jared, Josh, and Austin, first began growing cannabis after their uncle was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008. As a result, their main goal is to treat medical issues, not get people high.

The Stanley Brothers have capitalized on the popularity of the strain and launched a Canadian cannabis company with a $93 million IPO in 2018. In addition, they continue to sell products in the US under Charlotte’s Web name. Their products include CBD oils, capsules, gummies, and even dog treats. You can find Charlotte’s Web products on their website and in more than 3,700 retail stores across the US.

Charlotte’s Web Holdings is now a publicly-traded company that has increased in value by 22 percent in the last year. Part of that growth was fueled by a recent deal with Kroger grocery stores. Kroger will begin selling Charlotte’s Web products in 1,350 stores across 22 states this year.

In addition, Charlotte’s Web Holdings doubled the acreage of its grows facilities in 2019. The company produced 675,000 pounds of hemp in 2018, an increase from 63,000 the year before.

Charlotte Figi

Charlotte Figi was born on October 18, 2006. Raised in Colorado Springs, CO, Charlotte was born with Dravet syndrome. As a result, Charlotte began having debilitating seizures at age three. Her condition was so poor that by age 5, she couldn’t walk, talk, or eat. She was having nearly 50 seizures per day. Charlotte’s parents had tried a variety of treatments for their daughter’s condition, but nothing seemed to work.

What is Dravet Syndrome?

Dravet syndrome is a disorder that causes a child to have extremely severe seizures starting at around six months old. High fevers usually trigger these seizures. As the child ages, the seizures become worse and can lead to death. People with Dravet syndrome generally usually always need a caretaker. Between 15 and 20 percent of those with the condition die as a result.

A French psychologist named Charlotte Dravet first discovered the syndrome in 1971. In a very odd twist of fate, the person who found the disease has the same first name as Charlotte Figi, the girl suffering from the illness from our story. Dravet syndrome is exceptionally resistant to most forms of epilepsy treatment. However, a University of Colorado study from 2014 shows that CBD may be an effective treatment for the symptoms of Dravet syndrome.

Treating Seizures With CBD

Charlotte’s parents consulted her doctor. They decided to address Charlotte’s Dravet syndrome with CBD oil under her tongue. Charlotte and her parents sourced their CBD from the Stanley family, seven brothers who had developed a high-CBD strain of cannabis. They would eventually name the strain Charlotte’s Web after Charlotte Figi. There are plenty of high-CBD strains out there, but Charlotte’s Web is one of the only strains that contain nearly zero THC. That means that it won’t get you high.

Within a few weeks, her seizures had dropped from 50 per day to three per month. After that, they began to wean Charlotte off of her other seizure medications. After a month, Charlotte has completely weaned off any drugs for her seizures except for CBD. In less than a year, Charlotte had gone from being unable to walk or feed herself to learning how to ride a bike.

Charlotte’s story caught national attention. She was featured on national news channels NBC’s, CNN, and 60 Minutes, and brought awareness CBD onto the national stage. There’s even a documentary about Charlotte’s story that was played at the Sundance Film Festival.

Her story led to a scientific study on the effectiveness of CBD at the University of New York. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, saw 120 children with Dravet syndrome treated with CBD extracts over 14 weeks. The results were positive and saw participants’ seizure rates dropping across the board.

Charlotte’s Web

Charlotte’s Web is a human-made strain of cannabis plant, known as a “cultivar.” The strain was originally called “Hippy’s Disappointment” because of its low THC content. In fact, Charlotte’s Web contains less than 0.3 percent THC in accordance with US CBD laws.

It’s available in concentrates ranging from seven milligrams to 25 milligrams per milliliter. In addition, Charlotte’s Web concentrate products come in a variety of flavors, like mint chocolate, lemon twist, and orange blossom.

Charlotte’s Web can do more than just treat seizures. As a high-CBD cannabis strain, you can use it to treat issues like chronic pain, loss of appetite, sleep issues, and a variety of other symptoms. In addition, some researchers say that CBD may be used to treat certain types of cancer, and to treat symptoms associated with cancer treatment.

The strain comes in full-spectrum hemp extract. That means that extracts contain CBD in addition to a plethora of other compounds found naturally in the hemp plant. These additional compounds include chemicals called terpenes. Terpenes are flavor chemicals that exist naturally in all plants. Some scientists believe that incorporating terpenes in full-spectrum extracts allows for a synergistic effect that boosts the beneficial properties of CBD.

Charlotte’s Web allocates funds to support the following groups:

  • Children and Families
  • Veterans and Service Workers
  • Women and Girls
  • Responsible Agriculture

Effects of CBD

CBD affects the body by affecting the endocannabinoid system (ES). The ES controls things like stress and pain response, inflammation, and sleep and appetite. By binding to receptors in the ES, CBD may be able to affect these variables in the brain.

Some supporters even say that CBD can help reduce the spread of some cancers. There are over 100 cannabinoids, including CBD and THC. Every vertebrate animal has an ES, so cannabinoids should have the same effect on all vertebrates in theory.

In the decade since Charlotte’s story, the FDA has approved a form of CBD to treat seizures. In addition, the 2018 Farm Bill changed CBD’s classification from a drug to an agricultural product. This means that you can legally order CBD extracts from the internet and have them shipped anywhere in the U.S.
